RESEARCH

Mascot
For the mascot, all of us were assigned to come up with sketches. I decided to do a little research. I looked for animals that are able to eat oats. So I found out that horses, cattle, ruminants, sheep, dogs, pigs, and poultry eat oats. I chose sheep for the base of the mascot and did the sketches on Procreate.

Typography
Earlier, we decided to use Recoleta as our heading typeface but then I suggested the group to look for a new heading. So I searched what kind of typeface that are usually used for heading. I found that for headings, sans serif typefaces were developed for use in headings and titles. A Sans serif typically appears more simplified and bold than a serif typeface.

PROCESS

Week 4
For week 4, our group decided to choose each part of the project. These are the parts.

Figure 1.1 Parts for the Project

Once each task is divided, the next thing we have to do is find and collect references. These references will be collected on the MIRO board. During our meeting, we decided to vote and the final result was chosen. We then had to sketch out each of the parts. Since we had a hard time coming up with ideas for logos and mascots, one of us suggested that each of us should also participate in sketching mascots and logos. The following are sketches collected for the first time.

Figure 1.2 First Draft of Logo

For the logo, I decided to make the sketch a bit last minute from the meeting. Firstly, I went to look for a rounded cute type of typeface and I found a font called Arco by Rafael Olivo. I typed the word oatlicious and decided to make the "O" letter to be an oat. Then I was thinking of adding another variation where the logo has a shining effect. Turns out my logo draft was chosen when we had a voting.

Like what I have mentioned on the research part, I decided to use sheep for the base of the mascot. Another reason why I chose sheep is because its fur look like a cream puff which can be similar to an ice cream. I drew the ear of the sheep to look like oats. After discussing, we decided to create a logo that looks cute, funny and more towards like our product.

Me, Kim and Jiayee created sketches and we gained each other ideas. We decided to combine the design later.

Week 5
For week 5 meeting, we proposed our logo draft to the TBS but then they had another preference for the logo. Therefore, we decided to create another logo. These are the second draft with TBS' preference.

Then we showed our mascot to the TBS and they said they liked our draft because it represents each of the ice cream flavors. They gave us feedback to make the leg look longer. These are the mascot drafts that we showed to the TBS.

For the website, we discussed that we will have 3 pages. First is the Home, and then we will have the about us page and the product page. We listed down the content that will be displayed on each page. we decided to divide the parts again to refine the ideas. Kim will do the about us page and I will do the product page. For the homepage, me and Kim will both do it. These are the second draft of the website.

After we saw each other sketch, we planned to make the design look more refined. We moved our sketch to Figma. So usually after we are done with the sketch, we can move forward to make the low-fidelity prototype which is the black one. Before we started, we discussed combining the homepage ideas into one. For the style, we added our mascot to complement the layout. We also added some oats and a melting effect to the layout. These are the website content:

For the presentation, I was the person who was in charge of preparing the template. I searched the template from Canva. We then had a meeting and worked on the presentation content. These are the slides.

Week 6
On week 6, we had a presentation to the TBS and received feedback from them and from Ms. Lilian. Then on the first meeting on week 6, the UI/UX team which are me, Kim and Jiayee discussed finding some references for the interactive element of our website. I remembered seeing some cool animations on Instagram and I tried to look for the same concept on Youtube. I found the tutorial and the reference. here are the videos.

We also discussed asking the TBS some questions. These are the list of questions.

We held a meeting with TBS and showed them some of our ideas and asked them the questions that we listed before. They said they would give us the information by Monday.

FEEDBACK

Week 4
  • Logo
    • Try not to be too funky
    • Keep it simple but still corky, because there will be a mascot
  • Mascot
    • Cat: it is too popular and overused
    • Cute oat: relates to the product
    • Anime: less effective
    • Funny-looking ice cream: fun, friendly and cute
    • Try to make the mascot look more like an oat
  • Packaging
    • Rely heavily on the mascot
    • Better to have a handwritten logo because it is more suitable with the fun art direction
    • The simple packaging (2): easy to manage, it is clear and attractive to the gen z.
  • Website
    • Need to collect all of the information and the supporting image because it will affect the layout.
Week 5
  • Show our progress before next week to TBS
  • The sketch for the mascot has a better body shape
  • Key visual: nice, looks good in context
  • Packaging: Gather information and details if we want to create the prototype
  • Need to explore more typefaces for the heading (if we use the typeface that we use for the logo, it will look repetitive
Week 6
  • The sequence of the presentation slide
  • We need to work for the cohesiveness of our group
  • Each task is well divided to each member
  • Key Visual is clear
  • Need to finalize the logo

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

Week 5
  • Show progress to TBS and ask for their feedback
  • Collect details and information from TBS for the website and packaging
  • Prepare the presentation slide and the project document for next week's presentation day

Week 6
  • Continue working on the prototype
  • Solidify the idea
  • Finalize the logo
  • Search references for the interactive element of the website
  • Refine the mascot and packaging using AI

REFLECTIONS

Experience
For task 2, I feel that our project will advance to a higher level. This means that we have to improve our cooperation in order to do well on this project. During task 2, I felt that all my group members were very cooperative. They all want to divide their time for meetings, they want to give and receive feedback. We also remind each other when someone forgets that there is a meeting on a certain day. We all show progress every week. I am aware that each of us is not afraid of changes that can produce us good results but we will maintain what we think better, as designers. Such is the case when discussing with TBS. We do have different tastes and preferences, but we can discuss and find solutions together. I love working with new people. I hope the end result is the best result because I know that each of us is working hard for it.

Observation
I observed that we took a little longer to work during meetings. So the idea arose so that we prepared what needed to be prepared before the meeting. So that later during the meeting, we can discuss more efficiently. I also observed that even though we have our own parts to work with, it never hurts to try to give ideas for the other parts. Because the goal is the same, to produce the best work.

Findings
I found that when working with clients who in our case are TBS, the work we do is not necessarily what they want. I realized again that everyone must have different tastes. Therefore, we as designers are trained to be able to receive feedback and adapt to situations where our clients will have different opinions. We must have an open mind as designers. Any feedback given must be well considered. Keep what you have to defend and change it if it's best for you.
