Week 9 : Digital Surrealism

Surrealism takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality".
It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.

Dadaism :
An anti war art movement with art works that is  satirical and nonsensical in nature.

Figure 1. Example of Dadaism

What is digital surrealism?

Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start creating Surrealism artworks?

1. Sketch : Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.

2. Find Reference Images, For example :
  • Dream-like scenes and symbolic images

Figure 1. Example of  Dream-like scenes and symbolic images

  • Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions

Figure 1. Example of Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions

  • Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects

Figure 1. Example of Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects

  • Primitive or child-like designs

    Figure 1. Example of

Mindset During Creation

1. "Does this look real?"
Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.

2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.
When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.

Week 10 : Intro to After Effects

What is After Effects?
  • Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
  • After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
  • This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.
  • Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement.
  • Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story.
  • You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.
Compositing Layers in Photoshop
  • Basically Photoshop is a platform to compositing the layers.
  • All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in After Effects.
  • Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application.
  • Basically we can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects.
  • All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator.
  • After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.
Week 11 : Digital Photography

Exposure Setting

In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.

Figure 1. Exposure

The main parts of the camera:
  • Camera body:
  • Shutter
  • Image sensor
  • LCD screen
  • Camera lens:
  • Aperture/ Iris

Figure 1. Main Parts of the Camera

The camera body is a light proof box.

There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos.

Figure 1. ISO

Iris : Control the flow of light entering the lens.

Figure 1. Iris

Iris/Aperture is measured by f-stop, indicated by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4, f/2 , f/ 2.8, f/ 4, f/ 5.6, f/ 8, f/ 11, f/ 16, f/22 , f/32..

Figure 1. Iris Measurement

The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.

Shutter : Small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film. Shutter speed is measured in seconds: 1/1000 s,1/500 s,1/250 s,1/125 s,1/60 s,1/30 s,1/15 s,1/8 s,1/4 s,1/2 s,1 s, 2 s, 3 s…

Figure 1. Shutter

Figure 1. Shutter Speed.

ISO : Originally referred to the sensitivity of film—it's "light gathering" ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity—the signal gain—of the camera's sensor. The lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

Figure 1. Value of using higher ISOs

The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….

Lens Perspective

The are wide angle lens, standard lens and tele lens. Appropriate lens provided desire framing, lens choice affects angle of view. Different lenses are designed for different for different purposes. Lenses can be categorized by FOCAL LENGTH (the shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa).

Figure 1. Types of Camera Lenses

Focal length is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.

Figure 1. Focal Length

Depth of Field :  The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus.

Figure 1. Depth of Field

The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.

Figure 1. Lens Aperture Chart for Beginners

Wide angle lenses
It is ideal for fitting a large area into your frame. Wide angle lens is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.

Standard lens
It offers a fairly accurate representation of what the human eye sees, both in terms of visual angle and perspective. Images created by standard lens are perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of camera lenses.

Tele lenses
It is great for isolating a subject that is far away. Tele lenses allow you to photograph subjects from a distance thanks to their magnification.

Size: 1080 x 1920 px (I.G reel/ story size)

And then we need to fill a presentation. So this is my presentation

Biography

My name is Michelle Angeline Gunawan, I’m currently 18 years old studying at Taylors University. I was born in 26 February 2003. Since I was a kid, I enjoyed watching cartoons and I remembered my big brother drew Doraemon very cool and I decided to copy him. And then I started to enjoy drawing and I joined a drawing club at my school and got into a competition even though I did not win it. Then I started to enjoy reading comics and I wanted to become a comic artist back then, but it changed to a fashion designer when I started to enjoy watching barbie movies. As I can see from myself, my dream was not far from being a creative person. I developed there’s a thing called graphic design, and I learned it when I was in junior high school and decided to deepen the knowledge about design in senior high school and finally I choose to study design at university.

I loved korean culture especially their music and their idol. I watched their shows, buy their stuff and I got really motivated to do something similar like editing a variety show or designing their albums which has a photobook, photocards and many more. Since I really like kpop, they motivate me to keep pursuing my dream and enjoy my life by doing the things that I really like. I will combine them together in my poster and use the surrealism concept in it. I will add elements that is related to my dream and some will support the idea.

Statement about work

My work is about the process of achieving my dream. When we talk about dream, it has realistic and unrealistic side. For example like what my interest, hobby or anything else. I like to imagine things and when I hear the word imagination I immediately think of clouds. not only imagination but dreams too. So my idea is to add a crescent moon with me an a rabbit sitting there and then make it swing. With clouds and beautifully pink colored sky in the background because I love pink.

Since I will be talking about my dream, I want people to know that there is nothing wrong for us to dream. Everyone has a dream and must have their own way to achieve it. Never give up on chasing dreams, reach for your dreams as high as possible.

Motto/ quote :

I'm a dreamer. I have to dream and reach for the stars, and if I miss a star then I grab a handful of clouds.
- Mike Tyson

Mood Board 1

Figure 2. Mood board 1

I chose this image because I feel interested in making works related to the sky, clouds and moon. Because I feel they are related to dreams. Here I was inspired to create a work where there will be me sitting on a crescent moon tied with a rope and swinging in the sky and surrounded by the clouds and other celestial objects.

Mood Board 2

Figure 2. Mood board 2

I chose this picture because I like the concept where it uses pink which is my favorite color and has a dreamy effect with glitters. And I think by choosing pink as the color of the sky is very cute.

Mock Up Poster (digital sketch)

Figure 2. Digital Sketch

Since it's just a sketch, I find it easier if I look for a raw image first as a background and then draw on it. Here I am looking for a picture of the pink sky but we can see here the resolution is not good enough so for the final project I will look for a better resolution.

Here I draw myself sitting on the moon and accompanied by a rabbit.

Progress

Figure 2. Photo of myself

I took this picture using my phone while I was doing a hotel quarantine in Kuala Lumpur. I tried so many times but then I decided to choose this one.

Figure 2. Initial Digital Poster

This is my initial digital poster. But Mr. Martin said it lacks elements so I need to add more elements in it to make it looks more inviting to the viewer. And this is my poster after I improved it.

Final Outcome

Figure 2. Digital Poster Final Outcome

About my poster, first there is a rainbow and the reason why I add rainbow is because rainbows are a symbol of hope. I feel hope and dreams are closely related. We certainly hope that we will achieve our dream. And then I add two clocks on the top and bottom, when we are chasing our dreams, I believe nothing is fast/ instant and it all takes time and we don't know how much time we need to achieve our dreams so I removed the clock hand.

And then as you can see from behind me there are white feathers. White feathers come from the purest angels, and thus are messages of peace, love, protection and light. Finding a white feather is a powerful message and blessing from the Divine, and is a sign that all will be right for you soon. It’s also a symbol of cleansing, that whatever negative energy you may have accrued over a period of time is now being washed away, driven off by divine light and love.

When we are chasing our dreams, there must be a downside, there must be times when we feel we are not capable, that's why I added white feathers with the excuse that your angels are watching you, helping you maintain your strength, and that they are working hard to uplift your spirit , protecting you from evil and negativity.

And lastly the rabbit. We must have heard of the moon rabbit. Since rabbits are also related to the moon, that's why I added it beside me on the moon.

This is the final animated poster.

FEEDBACKS

Week 13 :
Specific Feedback : It is better for me to work with the second idea rather than the first idea because it has more design value.

Week 14 :
Specific Feedback : Add more elements that are related to the poster to make it looks more inviting. The animation is subtle already which is okay.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
My experience doing this task is quite pleasant. I can do something related to myself. From composing each existing layer to animating it, I find it quite challenging but very enjoyable. Directions and feedbacks given by Mr. Martin and Mr. Fauzi was also very clear and helped us all in doing this task.

Observations
I observed that adjusting the color of the photo is very important and has an effect on other elements. In addition, the choice of position when taking our own photos is also very important. When we choose the right lighting then the result will be good.

Findings

I find that the selection of elements for this task is very important both in terms of quality and quantity. I also find that looking for references for mood boards is very important because it helps to make our work easier.
