LECTURES

Lectures written and composed by Yvonne Low for Taylors University

Visual Techniques : Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro : the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. Chiaro = Bright, Scuro = Dark.

Figure 1.0 Examples in Contemporary Media

Why Chiaroscuro is used?
  • Increase dramatic tension
  • Create sensational effect
  • Pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
  • Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces
Visual Techniques : Composition (3)
  • Having rhythm in art is one of the most difficult aspect to achieve/ explain.
  • A good composition of design has :
    • Value tones
    • Shapes
    • Positive VS negative (chiaroscuro)
    • Perspective/ Spatial Depth
  • Good music = good beat, good beat = good rhythm
  • Basic visual elements (tools) to create 'movement' :
    • Shapes
    • Lines
  • Rather than just a plain background it is much better if we maximise overlaps.

INSTRUCTIONS

Visual Research

For this assignment, I chose one movie called "Soul".

Pixar's "Soul" is about a jazz pianist who has a near-death experience and gets stuck in the afterlife, contemplating his choices and regretting the existence that he mostly took for granted.

Synopsis Source : https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/soul-movie-review-2020#:~:text=Pixar's%20%22Soul%22%20is%20about%20a,he%20mostly%20took%20for%20granted.

And I was thinking that the decisive moment on this film is when 22 got its earth permission from Joe. The Earth Permission is a necklace with Earth pendant in it.

With Earth Permission, 22 then allowed to be born to Earth. 22 was scared at first to jump, but then Joe accompany 22. And this is the scene when they jump together. Not only them there are many other soul that is ready to born too.

Figure 2.1 Soul Movie Analyzation 2

I decided to use the jump scene for the decisive moment of the movie. And I did some analyzing about the character, and this is my note about it.

Figure 2.2 Soul Movie Character Analyzation

This is what I can summarize from it :

22 :
  • Has a dumpling-like face shape
  • Has one popping teeth
  • Has blurry orange cheeks
  • Has smaller body than Joe
Joe :
  • Has papaya-like face shape
  • Has thin smile
  • Wears hat and square-ish glasses
Both :
  • Has similar eyebrows
  • Has glowing soul body
  • Has gradient colored body
Progress

I sketch using Adobe Photoshop. I put one image to help me draw the character easier. And as you can see there is a tracing on the image. I did that so that it helps me memorizing and familiarizing the shape. Then I tried first sketching the Joe's head then I tried to draw a smaller fast one.

And then I finalize my sketch and this is how it turns out. It is still messy but I already got the idea.

Figure 2.4 Sketch 2

For the background I used gradient. And it looks like the light source is coming from the right it is where they, Joe and 22 start their jump.

Figure 2.5 Poster Background

Firstly I make 22, and this is the description for the progress and the tool that I use. And I added the Earth permission as well.

Figure 2.6 22 Character Broke-down

And for its color I used gradient with this format.

After that I make Joe, and this is the description.

Figure 2.8 Joe Character Broke-down

For Joe's body color I used this gradient format.

And then I decide to added stars and other soul to the background to make it prettier.

And for the title I followed the original movie poster. On the letter 'O' I add an orange circle. The font that I used are Showcard Gothic for the title and for the quote I used Futura Std (Bold Condensed).

FEEDBACKS

Week 7 :
General Feedback : Please be careful on the font that we are going to use.

Week 9 :
General Feedback : Pay attention the position of our title and other elements, whether it should be in the middle or not close to the edge of the poster.

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
I enjoyed this task very much. I was confused choosing the movie for my poster and then I remembered one movie that I watched with my friends, it is called 'Soul'. I found this movie very interesting. It talked about how a man really wanted to reach his dream before he died. And about one soul that are not born because it has not find its passion. I think it is very relatable to anyone, because some of us find it hard to know our own passion.

Observation :
I observed that we need to understand how to choose the right moment on the movie and then apply it on our poster. And I observed that font really affect our poster.

Findings :
I find that it is easier for me to work when I do a lot of research, experiment, sketches and I also find that I it is easier when I do the tracing before sketching.
