LECTURES
  • Our image to others may also differ from how we view ourselves. The view of our parents to us is different to the view of our friends when they see us.
  • How many versions are we?

    Figure 1.0 Our Versions

    • Self : How others/ we see me (physical traits and personality), our experiences, our interests, our thoughts, etc.
  • Self Portrait : Self representation in the form of a drawing/ painting/ sculpture/ design. It is a visual depiction on the self.
  • Mind map helps us to brainstorm and organize ideas and helps us to discover more about us and tells us which area should we focus on.
(+) Mind map was invented by Tony Buzan.
  • History : Painting 🡢 camera 🡢 other technology.

  • It is not necessary to put your face on your self portrait.

INSTRUCTIONS

Visual Research

I started by creating a mind map of myself. I created some branches of my traits and my interests.

Figure 2.0 Mind Map

Then, I look up for some inspiration on the internet. This is the first thing that catch my eyes.

Figure 2.1 Inspiration 1

From the first design that I found, I'm inspired to design myself with something that I like surrounding my head. And then I also found this similar idea that I wanted to design. It has beautiful leaves background with animals around her.

Figure 2.2 Inspiration 2

Then I also found this art, it is a man who paints himself when he is doing the art of himself. I was inspired by this one and I wanted to design myself to do something that I like.

Figure 2.3 Inspiration 3

While I was surfing on the internet, I found this design as well, then something came up to my mind. I got the idea to use the Gestalt Theory. I can improvise my hair to something similar to this but related to my interest or my traits.

Figure 2.4 Inspiration 4

This is my first sketch, as you can see there is me playing my phone and I'm wearing a gaming headphone. Behind me, there's a view of buildings at night because I enjoy looking at them. And then since my MBTI is INFP and on the character there are a few butterfly so I added some butterflies as well surrounding me.

Figure 2.5 Sketch 1

I did another exploration and I was thinking to create a laptop screen with me there and my favourite things. As I mostly do all of my work on laptop and I spend my time everyday in front of laptop screen, so laptop is very connected to me. This is my fast sketch.

Figure 2.6 Sketch 2

This is the progress of me making the logo of each apps. I used the pen tools to create them. For the Genshin one, it was quite hard to make it because it has a lot of details.

Figure 2.7 App Logo Remaking Progress

And then, I decided to add a window behind me on the second sketch. I was inspired by this design.

Figure 2.8 City at Night Inspiration

This is the description of my design, like what is this and that. Firstly, there are applications on the top left. Valorant, Online Game Multiplayer competitive 5v5 character-based tactical shooter. Then there is Genshin Impact which is an open-world action role-playing game and there is Discord which is an application to communicate with people.

Then behind my figure there is a window with a city view at night, like the one in my sketch, I wrote that I really like city views at night.

In my figure, I'm wearing a polka dot shirt and a pink cardigan. Besides that, I also wear pink gaming headphones. Again, as I wrote in my sketch, I really like the color pink. If you look at my bedroom, you can see that everything is almost pink.

Next to me, there is a teddy bear that represents one of the members of the Kpop group that I like, Tomorrow by Together, Beomgyu. And at the bottom right corner there is a song that is currently playing, which is a song from a Kpop group that I like, Tomorrow by Together.

Figure 2.9 Design Description

And I made this, this is what I caught from my design. The applications are symbols and I noticed that Discord's logo is an abstract symbol because it has a similar shape with a game console. The skip and pause symbols are arbitrary symbols because it is invented with the meaning constructed and are based on geometric shapes and colours. And the polka-dot on my shirt and the window in the building is repetition, polka-dot on the clothes is a pattern. And the music flow is the movement. And for the laptop background and the real background is a contrasting color which is yellow and purple. Both of them are opposite each other on the color wheel.

Final Result

And this is my final outcome for this project 1 which is Self-Portrait.

FEEDBACKS

General Feedback : Explore yourself and apply design principles to our self portraits. We can start by doing mind map and some sketches.

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
This project is one of the most interesting tasks to do, we were given the opportunity to make a self-portrait by applying some design principles which made this task quite challenging too, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

Observation :
I observed that we can find design principles in the life around us. Other than that, design principles are closely related to each other. But it's still very important to be able to distinguish them.

Findings :
I find that during the progress of this assignment, I had fun because I was able to explore myself while exploring design principles that I could apply in my designs. Interestingly, I became aware of what things I like and enjoy.
