LECTURES

Lecture 4 Harmony and Unity
  • Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may match the same theme, aesthetic style, or mood.

    Figure 1.0 Harmony

Harmony becomes monotony without variety. Variety is about a change or slight difference in elements and objects in composition, to avoid a boring composition. Harmony is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar or related elements.
    • Adjacent colors
    • Similar shapes
    • Related textures

  • Unity refers to the repetition of certain elements throughout your designs — whether it's color, shape or material — to unify the view. Although unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct roles in the way we experience design

    Figure 1.1 Unity

  • Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size.
    • Scale is the size of one object in relation to another object in a design or work of art. Scale is used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative sizes of objects.
    • Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationships with other parts of the same object. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
  • Scale can be determined in two ways:
    • Actual measurement

      Figure 1.2 Actual Measurement

    • Visual estimates based on comparison

Lecture 5 Symbol, Word and Image
  • Symbol means sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else (Cambridge Dictionary, 2020).

    Figure 1.4 Symbols

There are 3 types of symbol:
    • Pictorial symbols :
    • Abstract symbols : Abstract symbols can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.
    • Arbitary symbols : Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.

  • Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital.

INSTRUCTIONS

Visual Research

For this exercise, I decided to choose unity. I was inspired by puzzle pieces.

Figure 3.1 Unity Inspiration 1

Firstly, I started with creating nine square shapes.

Figure 3.2 Unity Progress 1

Then I added some circle to create the puzzle pieces.

Figure 3.3 Unity Progress 2

And this is the result.

Figure 3.4 Unity First Design

But then, I decided to create another design which was inspired by this picture.

Figure 3.5 Unity Design Inspiration

I did 2 design with different colors. This design is actually telling a story about how the animal on the planet unite together under the tree. there is a rabbit, a squirrel, a fox, a bear and a bunch of butterflies. And I make it at night time so I can create like a sky full of stars.

Figure 3.6 Unity Second Designs

I could not decide which one to use at first but then I was attracted to the right one because the background colour fits better than the left one. For the next design, I chose pictorial symbol. I was thinking of creating a kitchen stuff. I was inspired by this picture.

Figure 3.7 Symbol Inspiration 1

Then, I look up for another inspiration around the kitchen.

Figure 3.8 Symbol Inspiration 2

I was not sure about it, then I did another research and I found this image on the presentation that has been provided by Mr. Charles and Dr. Jinchi. I find it interesting to create a design that symbolize something.

Figure 3.9 Symbol Inspiration 3

Then I looked up on the internet and I suddenly got an idea to make a balance with an object in it.

Figure 3.10 Symbol Inspiration 4

This is my first trial on designing the symbol. Basically, it is about how the differences between the rich and the poor are treated upon the law. Poor people tend to get tougher punishments where rich people can lighten their sentences because they have money.

Figure 3.11 Symbol design

I still not sure about my design so I did some changes on my design.

Figure 3.12 Symbol Second Design

I changed the background color by adding gradient. I also change the top of the balance into a gold ball and I changed the floating money into a stack of money instead.

Final Results

This is the final result for my unity design

FEEDBACKS

General Feedbacks : Mr. Charles recommended us to make jump links to make it easier when someone is looking at our blog.

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
I feel better on exercise 3 weeks, it felt more relaxing for me. Mr. Charles is very kind, he gave us some time to finish our work that is going on. He gave us some feedbacks and he gave us some explanation as well. It was very helpful.

Observation :
I observed that there are some similar design principle but they are different so we need to be careful on differentiating them. I also observed that I can work better when I am calm and it is because I feel like I have more time and the space that has been given to me.

Findings :
I find that we can add other design principle to our own design and I find that I can design things even better when I do the sketches first and do some experiments.
