INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

Week 1

In week 1, we were gathered in class and Mr. Mike gave us a briefing on the Minor Project module. The following is a presentation from our Project Briefing.

Then, Mr. Mike explained the Design Thinking Process.

Then we were asked to write our names and emails in a Google Sheets table. After that, we were asked to form a group and choose the desired topic. In the first week, I formed a group with Britney, Cheryl, Jomin, Devina, Cecilia, and Asilah as our leaders. Because our class was on the second day, many other groups from Monday's class had already preceded us in choosing topics, so we had to choose the remaining ones. Surely other students have chosen the most interesting topic. We then chose to take the topic of alert devices for elderly and disabled people. We will collaborate with students from the UWB Czech Republic. However, that day our group has not been confirmed because the maximum number of UI/UX students in one group is 2. In the evening of the next day, Mr. Mike announced that our group had been confirmed. Once confirmed, we begin our contextual research. This is my contextual research on MIRO Board. I focused on topic falls among the elderly.

Week 2

This week, we were assigned the task of completing our incomplete conceptual research. The research project I worked on focused on falls among the elderly. Later on Friday, we had our first meeting with our partners from UWB. We held a meeting using Zoom. During the meeting, students from UWB presented their ideas for alert devices. All the ideas presented were very interesting. Then we got the bad news that we had to split our group from 2 to 3 groups so we had to mix the members. Honestly, I am very confused because why not from the beginning the provisions were made so. Finally, a new group was formed. I joined Cecilia as the leader and there were Devina, Hansel and Christie as members. We then discussed choosing which idea. We are interested in two ideas.

First option:

Stepan V - emergency bracelet BRIO, GPS tracking & alert activation

Our consideration:
  • both of them look good. but there might be a technical issue especially for 'brio', will the elderly understand to use this product?
  • people will be mistaken for 'brio' product because it looks like a USB.
Second option:

Vojtech B - SOS watch alert

After discussion, our group decided to choose the second option to choose Vojtech B.

Week 3

In the third week, we continued our project by creating user personas. Cecil asked me and Hansel to work on it. At first, we only created one each, which means there are two user personas. This is the user persona I created.

And this is Hansel's user persona.

But after we consulted with Mr. Mike, he said that 2 user personas are not enough. So we discussed and worked on the third user persona. This is the third user persona.

Then, we started creating interview and questionnaire questions.

Week 4

In week four, we continued our work on interview and questionnaire questions. Christie did product interview questions for our UWB partner. Devina did the interview questions for the Elderly. I did questionnaire questions for family members and was assisted by other members as well. These are the draft questions

Draft Questions for UWB Partner

Interview Questions for elderly

Questionnaire for the Family members

Later in the week, we had a meeting with students from UWB. We were tasked with presenting our research findings and asking questions to our collaborators from UWB.

Then in the meeting, we asked our questions to our UWB partner. although we didn't get through all our questions, we still managed to get enough answers to help us further our research.

Week 5

In week five, we started to share our questionnaire and targeted 80 respondents. We prepared some references for this project. We thought of an idea because when we saw the products made by our UWB partner, we were inspired by eggs. Then we propose two names that were inspired by eggs. First is Egg-lert and then SSU (Sunny Side Up). Our partner chose the first one, so then we proceed with Egg-lert. Not only that, Christie also prepared some logo sketches and Devina prepared some ideas for animation later. Devina prepared character sketches and animated themes. At the end of the meeting, we finally agreed to use a black and white style but would highlight the yellow (egg) color. This is our presentation for the meeting.

Week 6

In week six,  we prepare several ideas for marketing the product. However, Sir Mike is more concerned with the design of our partners' products. He said that the yellow button can interfere with the functioning of the clock. The hands of the clock become less visible and it will be difficult for the elderly to see it.

So then we proposed some ideas to our partner. This is our ideas. We proposed this idea to our UWB partner

Because of the late response, Devina decided to put our idea using Blender. This is the render output (not final render).

However, communication via chat was a bit difficult so we decided to do a Zoom meeting the next day. Finally, the discussion succeeded, our partner then tried to revise the design and this is the result.

At the end of the week, we visited Mr. DIY to buy a watch similar to our partner's product for us to use for the interview later. We cannot find the watches that were very similar to our products, so we decided to buy two watches.

Week 7

In week seven, we prepared to make our watch prototype to make it similar to our partner's product. Me, Cecil and Christie met at their unit. We drew and cut the material and glue it to the watch. This is the results.

On Wednesday, Cecilia, Hansel, and I had the opportunity to visit the in-laws of our church pastor for an interview. The meeting took place in the Ara Damansara area, and we decided to convene at Café 7-eleven. As we arrived, we exchanged warm greetings with our interviewee and introduced ourselves, setting a friendly and welcoming tone for the conversation. We took a picture together.

Once we were settled, Cecil took the lead and began asking the questions. I took notes, capturing the interviewee's responses, while Hansel recorded the entire conversation, ensuring that we had an accurate record of our dialogue. Throughout the interview, I was impressed by the interviewee's detailed answers. They not only provided detailed explanations but also demonstrated a deep understanding of the topic. Overall, the interview was a success, thanks to the active participation and collaborative efforts of everyone involved. We left the interview feeling inspired and grateful for the opportunity to learn from such a knowledgeable individual. The valuable insights gained during this meeting will be helpful for project.

Week 8
I made 5 pages for the application.
  • Home : to show the elder's location
  • Status : to show the elder's health status
  • Emergency Call : to call for emergency when needed
  • Notification : gives notification when there is a sudden change on the elder's health status
  • Profile : show the user profile

Week 9 - Week 15
Throughout the week, I focused on working on the application from just a framework to finalizing the details and finally making every button work and there was an animation at every page change. Below is the Figma file where you can access the application.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2
  • Completed contextual study
  • Need to also include the mechanical component of helping the fallen person to sit up or at least lift up the head rather than just the alert sensors

Week 3
  • Confirmed that they will be no need to design mechanisms or devices that would aid the fallen person to sit up or raising the head.
  • Only smart devices (IOT) are required for the product.
  • The current presented designs from the UWB students are conceptual and will require research to improve the design features. The co-design of the product between UWB and BDCM will continue till the end of the semester.

Week 4
  • Since the target users are elderly persons, the online survey would not be suitable. Semi-structured interview (1-to-1) is required. Need to identify the elderly persons to be interviewed. (Old folks’ home)
  • The interview questions are ready but seem to be too complex for elderly persons.

Week 5
  • Had an online meeting with the UWB partner and queries about the product’s features, functionality and design justifications were assessed by the group.
  • Interview questions for the elderly had been completed and ready to conduct the interviews.
  • If possible find ways to demonstrate the prototype design and its features to the elderly during the interviews.

Week 6
  • The product design of the yellow pressed part is fine but it obstructs the view of the watch’s hour and minute hands. Therefore, limiting the functionality of the watch to tell time. Suggested to consider alternatives such as the use of digital rather than analogue design and showing the time hands in full without obstructions

Week 7
No feedback

Week 8
Independent Learning Week

Week 9
  • Showed design ideas to the UWB partner and the selected art direction, art style for the animation and colour palette may not be appropriate to the targeted audience (senior citizen). Advised to go with a more relevant art direction and animation style.
  • The brand name ‘Egglert’ is acceptable but what names were considered? The concept of ‘Sunny-side-up’ that focuses on the watch’s interface design of an egg yolk is worth exploring as it does signify a positive-fun-bright start to a new day or cheerfulness.
  • The brand name, art direction and animation style are aimed at a younger target audience that the senior citizen. Is this because the purchasing decision maker is the younger target market? If so, the person wearing the watch may not like the branding even though they are not the ones buying it. Should consider a middle ground where the younger buyer and the senior citizen would both like and could relate with.
  • The watch design is proven to be likeable by senior citizens with the requirement to produce a smaller version for ladies.
  • Since the research had revealed that there’s a need to have added health monitoring features, why not change the watch to digital and not analogue? The watch could still ‘look’ analogue while powered by digital tech. This was the senior citizen who will still recognise the analogue-looking interface, and not ‘fear’ it. The digital tech would then enable more live data to be sent to the phone app for health monitoring. An audio feature could also be added since it’s digital but activated with one-touch knob access or even voice-activated.
  • The strap designs need to be shown to cater for customization.

Week 10
  • Art Direction almost completed with more relevance to the targeted age group
  • The brand name is now Golden Hour
  • New strap designs for both genders have not been designed yet
  • The new features have been included which integrates with the app
  • The wireframe or draft interactive flow has been completed
  • UI design has started but not completed

Week 11
  • The Art Direction is almost completed and needs the graphic elements to complete
  • The strap choices need to be referenced from current leading watches that targets the same age group
  • The rough UI design is completed but the features of the watch are not shown effectively.
  • The watch is confirmed to integrate with a smartphone
  • The animation flow is fine but needs to be drawn in a storyboard format to review the framing and continuity.

Week 12
  • Art direction board completed with the graphic inspired by the animation visuals, which could be using mascots from the animated character.
  • Strap options are shown with PU leather as the alternative to leather for the versatility of use. Need to show different skin tones for the final presentation.
  • The UI design has improved and need to consider how to make the product’s feature explanation more engaging.
  • The animation storyboard is completed and will be using limited animation or rig-based 2D animation.

REFLECTIONS

Week 2
This week, we were asked to complete our incomplete conceptual research. I found this week's research project to be an enriching experience. By exploring the issue of falls among the elderly, I gained new insights about factors that contribute to this issue. Then this week has been particularly exciting, as we held our first meeting with fellow students and lecturers from the UWB. During the meeting, we had the opportunity to hear presentations from each of the UWB students regarding the products they had developed. It was truly remarkable to witness the creativity that each student had put into their respective projects. Each product had its own unique appeal and potential. However, we knew that we could only select one of these products to focus on for our own project.

Week 3
This week, I continued to work on our project. Our focus this week was on creating personas. Initially, our group had set up two personas, but as we worked through the process, we needed to add a third persona to better capture the diverse range of individuals that our project. As a group, we discussed and shared our idea to develop our third persona. After receiving the consultation, we started writing interview questions and questionnaires.

Week 4
This week, our team worked on interview and questionnaire questions. Each of us was given a task, and I wrote a questionnaire question. I decided to divide the questionnaire into several parts, which I believe made it easier for the respondents to understand and answer the questions. Later in the week, we had a meeting with students from UWB. We were tasked with presenting our research findings and asking questions to our collaborators from UWB. The meeting was informative and engaging, and although we didn't get through all our questions, we still managed to get enough answers to help us further our research.

Week 5
This week, we begin to share the questionnaire that we have prepared. In addition, we also prepared some references for this project and when we saw the products made by our UWB partner, we were inspired by eggs. Then we also propose some brand names. We had a meeting with our partner and had a discussion. Our partner loved our second reference and liked the idea of the name Egg-lert. In addition, Devina also showed ideas for project animation.

Week 6
This week, we prepare several ideas for marketing the product. However, sir Mike is more concerned with the design of our partners' products. This makes us have to think more critically. We think of several solutions and ideas on campus and immediately propose these ideas to our partners. However, communication via chat was a bit difficult so we decided to do a zoom meeting the next day. Finally, our idea was conveyed and our partner revised it with his product design. We are pleased with the results of the revision. At the end of the week, we visited Mr. DIY to buy a watch similar to our partner's product for us to use for the interview later. From this week, I learned that we need to have a broad mind with the product we are going to work on. I also learned that we must be prepared for any consequences when we have prepared something and the results are not what we expected.

Week 7
This week, we visited the in-laws of our church pastor for an interview. Me, Cecilia and Hansel went on Wednesday to the Ara Damansara area and met our interviewee at café 7-eleven. When we arrived, we greeted each other and introduced ourselves. Then we started the interview. Cecil asked the question, I wrote the answer and Hansel recorded our conversation. Throughout the interview, the interviewee gives answers and explanations well and in detail. The results of the interview really helped us in continuing this project. I learned that interviews are very important to know different points of view to make a product. At the end of the week, I was shocked and panicked by the request of our partner from UWB who asked for updates on logo work and product presentation. We then discussed and decided to speed up the process.

Week 8
This week is independent learning week. We don't have classes and we do our chores. Hansel and I split the task of who will focus on the website and the application. Hansel chose to focus on websites and I focused on applications. The two of us then each designed the features that we would incorporate into the web and its apps. We also look for references that match our ideas.

Week 9
This week we prepared art direction materials for consultation. When receiving feedback, it turns out that we follow too much what our partners want, not what our target audience will want. We had to prepare new ideas for a new art direction. In addition, we were asked to be able to discuss with IT children about features that could be developed on our watches. What features can be developed at a price of 200 ringgit for the watch? We got 2 choices, the first is bluetooth and the other option is to get subsidy assistance from the government. In addition, at the end of the week, Hansel and I prepared UI design for the web and the application.

Week 10
This week, I'm in the early phases of app creation. There are many things we need to synchronize with each other. We ended up dividing the tasks, I was working on the application and Hansel was going on the website. For this initial phase, there is not much to see. I'm just creating an initial outline for the app, such as what features I'll show.

Week 11
This week, I continued working on my application. I'm receiving feedback on sharing notification types. There are a few things I have to correct. In addition, I have to keep making the flow of the application smoother and improve the design to make it better. Then, I also had to create a new page to explain how to connect the watch with the application so that it could be included in the manual book.

Week 12
This week, the next progress I worked on for the application was to add details to the home page. I created a feature where users can search for the nearest hospital from the location elderly. In that feature, it will be seen how far the distance between the elderly and the hospital. Then I also changed the icon of the emergency call feature which was previously the phone and the latest is the emergency alert icon.

Week 13
This week, I added a page to tell users what's on the home page and what it does. I also added some small details like elements on some pages.

Week 14
This week, I did a revision to the small details in the application such as correcting the spacing between elements. In addition, I also improved the registration section for the clock and user of the application because on the profile page, I should have made it for the user profile of the application not for elderly.

Week 15
Finally for the last week, I made sure each page was correct with its own content. I also replaced the old watch image with a new one with a logo and with a different color. After making sure all the pages are correct, I start working on the transition animations of each page and make each button active. With it, the app will work and show you its functionality. After that part of my assignment, I do the rest of the work for minor projects such as completing reflections and peer evaluations. In addition, I also need to work on my blog as well. Lastly, I would also like to thank my teammates who have been willing to work with me to produce the final result of this task.
