LECTURES

Week 2 : Character Design Basic

Things that make a character design unique :
  • Shapes

    Figure 1.0 Shapes

  • Colour

    Figure 1.1 Colour

  • Emphasis & contrast

  • Harmony

  • Expressions/ poses

Week 3 : Composition
  • Composition : how your image is put together, and there are tricks you can keep in mind that, if used in the right way, can take your art to the next level and make a piece really grab your audience’s attention.
  • Perspective :
    • Foreground (close to the viewer)
    • Midground
    • Background (far away)
  • Type of Shots :
    • Establishing

      Figure 1. Establishing

    • Bird's Eyeview

    • Framing

    • Medium Shot

    • Close up

    • Worm's Eyeview

  • Positive Space : The subject
  • Negative Space : The background or the area that surrounds the subject of the work.

Week 4 : Perspectives
  • Perspective : is the method of representing these aspects in your illustrations. It can create a sense of realism or it can be manipulated to make your images more dynamic and interesting. It is used to create depth.
  • One-Point Perspective : the method is to draw your objects emerging from a single point on the horizon.

    Figure 1. One Point Perspective

  • Vanishing point : the point (see the red dot above at the visual horizon where you draw your objects emerging from)

    Figure 1. Vanishing Point

  • Two-Point Perspective : there are vanishing points on either side of the horizon.

    Figure 1. Two-Point Perspective

  • Three-Point Perspective : usually consists of two vanishing points on opposite sides of a horizon (as in two-point perspective), but with the addition of another vanishing point high above or below the horizon.

INSTRUCTIONS

In the first exercise, we were assigned to design characters with vormator shapes.

Figure 2.0 Vormator Shapes

This character is basically inspired by my friend's suggestion. I was confused on what should I design then I asked my friend for a suggestion and he said that I could try the red panda. And this is my first sketch of my character.

Figure 2.1 Vormator Challenge First Sketch

The idea is that Booba is a chef and his signature dish is The Rainbow Dumplings but then I changed it to The Hell O' Dumplings. It is a spicy dumplings. Since Booba came from China, I made him works as a chef at Chinese Restaurant. This was the first design idea.

Then after the tutorial that Ms. Jennifer gave, I tried to give Booba some shadings by adding gradients. This is the final result of Booba.

Figure 2.3 Exercise 1 Final Outcome

And for the card design, I decided to create 2 designs. The first design is the usual Booba card. And for the second design, I made a Chef Booba card. In the second design I added a chef's hat and an apron to Booba and the chili around it to represent his signature dish, The Hell O' Dumplings. And on the background of the card I drew a doodle with the low opacity brush tool.

Figure 2.5 Back Card

I like the chef card better than the basic card, but still I like it too. So for the submission, I choose the chef card and this is the final result.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2 :
General Feedback : We need to make sure that we used the vormator shapes that have been provided.

Week 3 :
General Feedback : It will be better if we use the proper color scheme to make our character looks more appealing and unique.

Week 5 :
General Feedback : The card has well composition and layout. Ms. Jennifer also said that the doodle is nice for the background card.

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
I really enjoy studying the IVN class. Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer are really kind, they explain the materials very clear and understandable. The presentation is very interesting to see.

Observation :
I observed that we need to understand how to make our character appeals to the eye. By understanding the design principles, it will be easier for us to make our character unique.

Findings :
I find that progress is important to show because it lets people know how are we producing our design. I also find that it is better for me to be more explorative when it comes to designing something eventhough there is a limit or rules like the vormator challenge.
