Week 5 : Poster Design

Conceptual Poster Design :
  • Posters is a conventional medium to convey information to the target audience.
  • Posters can be cluttered or straightforward.
  • The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense.
Public service announcement :
A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Creative posters where meaningful information comes wrapped with striking pictures and images.

Figure 1.1 Creative Poster

Creative Poster is made up of four key features :
  • Title : The title is a descriptive indicator of the contents of the poster, and it should not exceed two lines of text.
  • Graphic : Graphics must appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher).
  • Text : The text should clearly describe the message clearly but not overloaded.
  • White space : White space creates “breathing room” within poster, which helps viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information being presented.
Things that affect the order and style of these four key features :
  • Layout
  • Flow : Flow coordinates with how readers’ eyes move around the different sections of poster. Maintain Hierarchy While Displaying Your Message.
  • Color : Color draws reader’s gaze and define the different sections of your poster.
Week 6 : Poster Design Execution

Public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Steps : How to Make Poster
  1. Research about your topic
    1. Study and gather all related information about your topic.
    2. Write a summary about your topic
    3. Highlight the key points of your summary
    4. Define the Title
    5. Define the Slogan
    6. Define the Details
    7. Define the Call For Action

  2. Define your concept
    1. Create a section for each contents (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
    2. Sketch your mock up poster
    3. Fill in with details
      Decide on Idea, and approach:

How the designer EVOKES viewer’s feeling, deliver strong impression?
      Shock Value → Brutal

Figure xx Example of Shock Value → Brutal Poster

      Provocative → Upsetting

Figure xx Example of Provocative → Upsetting Poster

      Humor → Sarcastic

Figure xx Example of Humor → Upsetting Poster

      Sensitive → Heart warming

Figure xx Examples of Sensitive → Heart Warming Poster

      Artistic → Subtle

Figure xx Examples of Artistic → Subtle Poster

  3. Start to develop your design projects
    1. Visualize your idea & concept into sketches.
    2. Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
    3. Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
    4. Apply color, typography, textures & effects
    5. Finalize your design with color correction

Week 7 : Colour Theory

Colour theory is both the science and art of using color. It explains how humans perceive color; and the messages colors communicate artistically and emotionally.

RGB V.S CMYK
Cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) are the primary colors of printing.
RGB color is used to display on your computer screen.

Figure xx RGB V.S CMYK

RGB: Additive color mixing model
Colour is created by mixing red, green and blue light sources of various intensities.
TVs, screens and projectors use red, green and blue (RGB) as their primary colors.

Figure xx RGB Color Mixing Model

CMYK: Subtractive color mixing model
Colour is created by the subtraction of light.
The CMYK color system is the color system used for printing.

Figure xx CMYK Color Mixing Model

Hue, shade, tint and tone
  • Hue is the most basic of color terms and denotes an object’s color.

    Figure xx Hue

  • Shade is a hue to which black has been added. For example, red + black = burgundy.

    Figure xx Shade

  • Tint is a hue to which white has been added. For example, red + white = pink.

    Figure xx Tint

  • Tone is a color to which black and white (or grey) have been added.

    Figure xx Tone

Colour Harmony
The arrangement of the colors in design in the most attractive and effective way for users’ perception.

Figure xx Colour Harmony

  • Monochromatic : is hard to make a mistake and create the distasteful color scheme
  • Analogous : 3 colors located right next to each other on the color wheel.

    Figure xx Analogous Color Wheel

  • Complementary : Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel. This scheme is opposite to analogous and monochromatic since it aims to produce high contrast.
Complementary colours make imagery pop, but overusing them can get tiresome.

    Figure xx Complementary Color Wheel

  • Split-Complementary : involves the use of three colors. Start with one color, find its complement and then use the two colors on either side of it.

    Figure xx Split-Complementary Color Wheel

  • Triadic : Triadic colors are evenly spaced around the color wheel and tend to be very bright and dynamic.

    Figure xx Triadic Color Wheel
The Psychology of Color
Colors have an extraordinary ability to provoke specific emotions for each individual and to attract people’s attention and harmony simultaneously.

Figure xx The Psychology of Color

Warm V.S Cool
Draw a line through the center of the wheel, and you’ll separate the warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) from cool colors (blues, greens, purples).

Figure xx Cool Colors V.S Warm Colors

Warm colors often evoke feelings of happiness, optimism and energy. However, yellow, red and orange can also have an attention grabbing effect and signal danger or make you take action (think stop signs, hazard warnings and barrier tape).

Cool colors are usually calming and soothing but can also express sadness. Purple is often used to help spark creativity as it’s a mixture of blue (calm) and red (intense).

Black
Black is often used sparingly – such as for text – but it works quite well as a primary colour element (like for backgrounds). Black adds an air of sophistication and elegance, and also mystery, though with much bolder confidence.

White
As primary, white gives off an impression of clean, virtuous, healthy. White pairs well with just about anything, making it ideal as a secondary colour.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2A

And for the project 2A we need to choose one image from the link that has been provided.

Link : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1czJ0D44XGRTp8gVCHxqcuArBfLZqWK5-

Then we choose our own references that suits the image. I chose this image.

Figure 2.14 Black and White Image

I believe he looks like he is European, so I looked up on the internet and I find this one image that I think his skin suits him.

Week 5 : Task

Research on "mental heath affected by COVID19":

  1. How am I affected by COVID19? Physically and mentally? Are they related?

Physically I feel that I have my body sore more often because I rarely exercise and every day just sit and stare at my laptop screen. Mentally, I feel them changed. I tend to have a really bad mood swings which is really annoying to me because it affects my daily life, I lose motivation to do some works when I have my mood swings. So to fix that, I fill my free time with playing some games with my friend online and watch some of my favorite K-pop group.

I feel like both of my physical and mental health effect are related as I now rarely talk to other people face to face, I become more closed person to others, I feel like at my limit when I talk with new people especially because I started my university life online and I am an international student so I find it really hard to make new friends. And because I feel became more closed it makes me lazy or unmotivated to go on exercises or to go outside, I feel better when I am on my bed. It's just more comfortable now, but I hope I can get my motivation back to make new friends, to work, to go outside soon when I finally be able to go outside because of this covid situation.

  2. Research online: "young adult/student's mental heath affected by COVID19", save/bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make a summary of each articles.

    Source : https://www.unicef.org/lac/en/impact-covid-19-mental-health-adolescents-and-youth

The rapid assessment strengthened the voices of 8,444 adolescents and young people between the ages of 13 and 29 in nine countries and territories in the region. The result is about the feelings they faced in the first months of the response to the pandemic and the situation in September. The results are :

    27% feeling anxiety
15% depression in the last seven days.
For 30%, the main reason influencing their current emotions is the economic situation.

    Figure 2.21 Rapid Assessment Result

The general situation in their countries and regions has affected the daily lives of young people. The results are :

46% reported having less motivation to do activities they normally enjoy
36% feel less motivated to do routine work.

    Figure 2.22 General Situation

The perception of the future has also been negatively affected, the results are :

43% of the women feel pessimistic about the future compared to 31% of the male participants.

  4. Summary about my topic

In this Covid pandemic, we are encouraged to use masks, wash hands and other health protocols and we are advised not to leave the house.

Based on the results of the articles we read, we can see that there are young adults who are affected by their mental health. Some feel anxious, depressed, have no motivation to do things and even feel pessimistic about the future.

Of course, this Covid pandemic has a lot of negative effects. For us students, we have to do online teaching and learning activities that make us feel very limited in space and time. We have to sit and stare at our laptop screens all day because everything we do comes from laptops. In addition to making us rarely move, our eyes are also affected by staring at a laptop screen for too long.

To be honest with myself, it became increasingly difficult for me to express my true feelings. I feel like I have limited space and I know that's not good. So in this assignment I want to make the theme where in this pandemic what we have to cover with masks is our mouth and nose, not our true feelings. We all have the freedom to express ourselves. Don't let this pandemic situation make us put a mask on our feelings. Don't hide yourself and express your feelings.
This is the slide that we need to fill for progression check.

Final Results

This is the final result for my project 2A.

Figure 2.28 Project 2A Final Result

And this is for the project 2B

Figure 2.29 Project 2B Final Result

Description :
This poster talks about freedom of expression. We don't need to be afraid to express ourselves, we don't need to put a mask on our own feelings and emotions. Everyone in this world has the right to expression, so don't be discouraged by this pandemic. The right thing to do is to wear a mask to cover our mouth and nose to avoid the spread of the covid virus. The blue background and the raindrops behind this child symbolize feelings of sadness and I drew the word 'mask' on his mouth and nose.

    FEEDBACKS

    Week 7 :
General Feedback : The main point of the poster is image not an illustration.

    Week 8 :
Specific Feedback : Progress 2 is good, but remember the size for the poster is 1980 x 1080

    REFLECTIONS

    Experience
These projects are very fun to work. Even though I had to work with 2 different project in one, both of them left an interesting impression. Project 2A was very fun because we get to recolor the black and white image. For project 2B, I was relieve because I can create a poster that is quite related to my current situation in this pandemic.

    Observations
I observed that there are a lot of people's mental that are affected by this pandemic. The effects are not small. And by working this project 2B I hope we can help some people re-gain their happiness.

    Findings

I found that I had a lot of fun working on these 2 projects. And I can explore and research on what did the pandemic do to people in the world.
