LECTURES

For the lecture class, we get to learn the introduction to composition, which includes:
  • Introduction to basic composition
    • Focal Point
A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

      Figure 1.4 Focal Point

    • Scale & Hierarchy
Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

      Figure 1.5 Scale & Hierarchy

    • Balance the Elements
A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to assume each element has a 'weight'. Smaller objects may 'weight' less than larger objects, and heavy textured elements may 'weight' more than flat colored elements.

      Figure 1.6 Balance the Elements

    • White Space
White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition.

      Figure 1.7 White Space

  • Rules of third
The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points. Rule of third is a way to:
    • Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
    • Creatively use negative space.
    • Create conversation between the subject and background.

  • Figure 1.8 Rule of Third

    Figure 1.9 Rule of Third

  • Golden ratio
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Week 3 :

On week 3, Mr. Martin showed us a tutorial on how to use some tools on Adobe Photoshop. While he was demonstrating, I follow his tutorial. There are many new things that I learned from in the lecture session. I really enjoy experimenting the new tools that I just learned.

Figure 1.0 Compositing Collage Exercise

I managed to do the masking and put all of the tables into the living room. We learned how to use the quick selection tool, magic wand tool and pen tool. Those tools are used under certain conditions. It is not possible for us to use the magic wand tool if the background of the object is not plain.
  • Lasso Tool : Allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
  • When you click on the Lasso Tool from the Toolbar, you will see three different tool options:
    • Lasso
    • Polygonal Lasso
    • Magnetic Lasso

  • Pen Tool : The way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look.

Week 4 :

Adjustment Layers

The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.
  • Brightness/ Contrast : Makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image. The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

    Figure 1.4 Brightness/ Contrast

  • Level : Modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.

    Figure 1.5 Level

  • Curves : Let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.

    Figure 1.6 Curves

  • Exposure : Lets you adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.

    Figure 1.7 Exposure

  • Selective Color : Adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.
Filters

Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor. There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

PRACTICAL

PROJECT 1A

Week 2 :

For the practical class, we were asked to identify our collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into our own concept & story. And then we need to take 3 photo of our collage pre-composition.

Figure 3.3 Pre-compositions

I was not satisfied with my own results, so I decided to compose another physical collage since the additional materials just arrived at my home. And this is the final composition for my physical collage.

PROJECT 1B

Week 3 :

For the practical class, we were asked to create 3 different composition digital collages from the images that we have downloaded from the Google Drive link that Mr. Martin has provided.

Figure 3.0 Compositions

After some reviews were given, I decided to choose the first composition that I made.

Digital Collage Final Outcome

Week 4 :

On week 4, we learned about the adjustment layers and filters. And this is how improve my digital collage. Firstly I added brightness and contrast into it. And then light green from solid color tool and the soft pink. I also added saturation and vibrance.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2 :

Specific Feedback : There is no focal point on the composition. The color palette is also too bland and the photo is not taken in the right position and not in a proper lightning.

Week 3 :

General Feedback : There are many similar design on our digital collage, so it will be so much better if we create a different and unique digital collage.
Specific Feedback : Mr. Martin said that the first digital collage that I did is already a good composition.

REFLECTIONS

PROJECT 1A

Experience :
I am happy to learn digital photography & imaging. This is very new to me and I am interested in learning about it. At first I was quite nervous about this lesson but Mr. Martin explained very well and he was so friendly.

Observation :
I observed that I can follow the explanation given by Mr. Martin. The explanation he gave was easy to understand.

Findings :
I find that there are many things to explore when composing physical collage. There are many materials around us that we can use and they are not limited.

PROJECT 1B

Experience :
I really enjoyed exploring the new tools that Mr. Martin explained. It was very interesting to be able to see the demo that Mr. Martin gave. I followed what was explained by practicing it in Adobe Photoshop

Observation :
I observed that there are many things to do on Adobe Photoshop. It gave us a lot of space to create many design

Findings :
I find that we can do so much exploration in Adobe Photoshop. It has so many tools that can make it easier for us to make a design.
